Quotation

For us to provide a rope quotation, we will need: once you have all your information, please email us at sales@avonropes.co.uk
  • Tower/church details/dedication
  • Weight of bells
  • Overall length of rope required including untucked tail end length that you require (*)
  • Length of sally (standard is 0.92cm or 3ft). Longer sallies are sold in 6" units, up to 1.8m (6ft long).
    • sallies that are measured between 3ft and 3ft6 would have started life as a 3ft long sally.
The length of rope to tie off around the wheel needs to be from 10ft (3m) long to 15ft (4.5m) long. We are happy to supply your ropes with longer top ends, but the rope wrapped around the spokes rarely get used, therefore keeping it shorter keeps the costs down.

* if we do not know your tail end lengths, we will assume a 10ft tail end for quotation purposes.
Traditionally with all natural top ends, bell ropes were ordered with spare rope wrapped around the spokes for re-use later.

In addition to the above information, in order for us to make your ropes for you we will need;
  • Length of untucked tail end
  • Sally colours (up to three), if two colours we will need to know which one is the more dominant.
  • Unless otherwise advised, we will assume the length of sally is standard at 0.92cm or 3ft and are finished to the traditional 1⅞" (47mm) diameter
If you require sallies which are specific dimensions, please contact us with your requirements.

The un-tucked tail end length is related to the wheel size of your bells. 90% of all bells the tail ends are 10ft (3.05m) for bells between about 4cwt and 9cwt with varying lengths of tucked back rope.

We recommend the length of tucked back rope on any tail end should be no longer than about 3 feet (0.9m) on most bells where the rope touches the floor, increasing to no more than 3ft 6 (1.05m) on any size of bell. We have found it is a false economy to order additional length just in case it needs to be spliced; it tends to increase the rate of wear at the tucks and by hitting the floor.
